Recycling is a great opportunity to engage the entire family. Being able to see the connection between the materials and sustainable living is important. By repurposing items, children are able to see there is value in their efforts. It takes far less energy and fewer resources to make new items from recyclable products, ultimately preserving natural resources. Give planet earth a hug and invest in keeping our land, air, and water healthy by trying some of these ideas:
1. Make a bird feeder from an egg carton or plastic water bottle.
2. Try to pack a waste-free picnic.
3. Go on a recycling scavenger hunt around your neighborhood.
4. Read a book about recycling.
Try some of my favorites:
• The Berenstain Bears Go Green by Jan and Mike Berenstain
• How to Help the Earth-by the Lorax by Dr. Seuss
• Compost Stew by Mary McKenna Siddals
• The Earth Book by Todd Parr
• Don’t Throw that Away by Lara Bergen
5. Make a homemade puzzle by cutting a cereal box or greeting card into creative pieces.
6. Gather up old toys or clothes and deliver them to a local donation box or store.
7. Take a field trip to the Beaver County Recycling Center.
• Snap a photo of your experience.
• Email the County Recycling Coordinator and share your thoughts: hvogt@beavercountypa.gov
8. Have your children help collect the recyclables from around the house. Encourage them to help get the bin to the curb.
9. Try to see how many different recycling bins you can find around your community.
10. Help with a garbage clean-up or plant a tree.
